"Poetic Justice"

Obama has fired General McChrystal and replaced him with General Petraeus who will be responsible for turning around and (hopefully) winning the Afghanistan war. Many of us recall that during the congressional hearings on the Iraq war "surge" many top democrats including then Senators Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe "bite me" Biden, accused Petraeus of being a liar. Left wing organization MoveOn.Org also ran the famous "General Betrayus" full page ad in the New York Times. To their dismay, Petraeus was successful managing the Iraq surge and left those democrats looking silly.

Now all these top democrats are praising Obama for his "leadership" in firing McChrystal and his "wisdom" in putting Petraeus in charge. Typical Washington hypocritical politics.

Here is a scenario that would truly be a clear definition of "Poetic Justice":

General Petraeus takes control in Afghanistan, reorganizes, manages the Afghan "surge" and wins the war there. Then he retires in 2011, runs for president in 2012 and defeats Obama.

Could happen folks.

He would get my vote. Unfortunately, retired Generals haven't made very good Presidents overall........with some exceptions.

Washington - Great President....a real Statesman
Jackson - Controversial due to his support of slavery but was very big on individual rights (if you were white)
W. Harrison - Died after 32 days in office, accomplished nothing.
Taylor - Died 16 months into his term but did set the policy that eventually colonized Texas.
Pierce - Generally considered the "worst" President in US history.
A. Johnson - A disaster, reversed all of Lincoln's post war policies that probably caused most of the racial issues in the next 150 years. He was also the first to be impeached.
Grant - Generally rated a good President but choose poor appointees that expanded corruption and post-war profiteering which is generally considered his legacy. Elected to two terms and was responsible for many positive elements of reconstruction after the civil war.
Hayes - Poor at best, elected by the Presidential commission in a disputed election where he lost the popular vote.
Garfield - Assassinated early in his Presidency and accomplished nothing.
Arthur - Succeeded Garfield and completely reformed civil service. Generally regarded as an effective President.
B. Harrison - Supported and signed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and had the first Federal budget that exceeded a billion dollars.
Eisenhower - Built the Interstate Highway System

5 good ones out of 12 generals that were elected might lead me to question how well a man that leads in battle can lead in Washington because all of the above were considered good-to-great Generals.

Cheers, John

Well I didn't theorize whether or not he would be a good president - just "poetic justice". But these are strange times especially if militant Islam continues its march forward we may need military expertise for some time. If not military, a businessman - "politicians" are ruining this country.

An interesting side note - after I posted this blog I drove into town to run some errands and listened to Rush Limbaugh on the way. Within 30 minutes, except for the "poetic justice" part he quoted my blog almost verbatim - glad to see he or his staff read it (chuckle).
