Priorities?

Any good manager will tell you that when there are serious problems, you work on the most important ones first and forget about everything else.

Obama's first executive orders included closing the Guantanamo prison in Cuba, bringing the terrorists to the USA for trials, and eliminating all harsh interrogation techniques. I'm sure terrorists around the world are running around like Munchkins singing "Ding dong the witch is dead".

And then last Friday evening during the 'slow news cycle' he quietly reinstates an executive order which provides for the USA to fund overseas "Family Planning Services" which we all know is code for supplying contraception and abortions around the world. It is estimated this will cost our country $400-500 million/year. Whether you are Pro Choice or Pro Life does the Obama administration remember this country is BROKE!

Our economy is in shambles, we are in debt over our heads, millions are out of work, we are involved in two wars, terrorism continues to loom it's ugly head, and Obama's first priorities are to lighten up on terrorists and lead the charge on international population control.

Good work Mr. President, we are pleased to see you and your administration have your priorities in order.

In all seriousness, all -- let me repeat that in capital letters -- ALL of the major problems facing this planet and this country can trace their root cause back to one thing: Overpopulation. TOO MANY PEOPLE. I'm no Obama fan -- it's too soon for me to form an opinion, but I predict I'll like him about as much as I liked Dubya -- but one could argue that addressing "international population control" is really looking at the Big Picture. Of course, everyone will fixate on the abortion debate and ignore the real issues. Not that it matters. I've said it before, and I'll say it again till the hammer falls: we're all doomed.

And why do we or any other government in this world have the right to undertake population control? OK as long as it doesn't affect our friends or family?

You are muddying the issue (unintentionally, I presume). No one is "undertaking population control," which, stated that way, makes it sound involuntary and totalitarian. The proposed aid would provide funds FOR GROUPS that provide counseling, contraception and yes, maybe even abortion (that is, it would only indirectly fund such services). But that's not forcing anything on anyone. It's providing aid to those who need it -- including those who may not share your same religious views on contraception and abortion.

Nevertheless, your fiscal concerns are of course valid, so we're getting a bit off topic here (and you'll be happy to know that Obama is taking out this specific item from his proposed bill). My overall point remains valid, though -- overpopulation is the root of all the world's problems. So I personally would not mind spending money on things that might have some impact on the world's population... and thus have a ripple effect through the rest of the world's problems. But that's probably thinking too big for some small minds (present company excepted, of course).

It seems that the older we get, the less we agree on things.... Oh well, at least it keeps the debate lively, and keeps your blog interesting to your readers, ha ha....

Hey Chuck, hey Michael,

Maybe we should stop funding AIDS research and stop giving medicines to third world countries for vaccines? Why pour more money into population control, if we could solve the problem simply by stopping funding for things that prevent death around the world. Just let people die, especailly in those third world countries, natural selection, ya' know? The only people left would be the strongest, smartest, and wealthy enough people/nations, and the world would be better off, yes? In case you didn't know I am being sarcastic! Why would you argue that abortion should be used to control populations, when we spend so much money on "saving" everything else on the planet!? Would you never plant new trees in an old forest, for the sake of saving the old trees? Or do you let them die, and begin to plant the new. That's what abortion is like for population control. It's a backwards way of looking at the problem.
